 ====== Printing ====== ====== Printing ======

-=== Policy ===+We have different printers, each situated in a different [[printing:maps |room or corridor]]. ** Not all printer are disponible to everyone, so pay attention when you print**. Printers located in rooms, or that have a personal name can be used only by authorized users.

-In our network nobody can connect his/her laptop directly to the printers, all printers accept connections (and documents) only from printers servers. These servers have different features to simplify the management of the printers from a user point of view. The possibility to print is available also for workstation connected to the //epfl// or to the //public-epfl// wireless networks. +===== Features =====
-Printers can be used with all the major O.S. used today (Apple Os X, Linux, MS Windows) and we try to maintain the level of management the lowest possible. Where the automatic configuration of the computer is impossible (as with wireless connections), we have opened some channels so the manual connection to the printers is the simplest possible (again: from the user perspective). +

-<box 90% round blue>
-Every printer of //public// access can print on Recycled or White paper and in single or double sided mode. Most of these printers are High-speed model, wich means that they can print at least 25 pages per minute in B/W. Only the smallest and oldest printers are slower.

-=== HowTo print === +
- +
-== Printing from a Linux Workstation == +
-To use one or more of the printers, users of linux workstations of the labs needs only to select the printer from the printer dialog box of the graphical applications they're using+
-The subsystem that manage the print of documents (CUPS for friends) understands a variety of formats including text, PostScript, and PDF. Many GUI programs, such as Mozilla and Acrobat, will print by passing arguments through LPR. Usually you can see the command the program will use after selecting Print from the File menu. It's possible to print directly from command line using the lpr or lp commands. [[printing:lpr|Here]] you will find a short memo about the most useful parameters for these commands. [[printing:lpr:advanced|Go there]] if you want see a list of the advanced options. +
- +
-<note> +
-The **gtklp** program: The use of this program is preferable when you don't want to use the standard options of printer queues. +
-To use this program just launch it from the menu **Applications->System Tools->GtkLP**, load the file you want print and select the option you desire. +
-</note> +
- +
-<note tip> +
-  * Users of laptops connected to the wired network have to start the //cups// daemon in order to see the shared printers. +
-  * Users of laptops connected to the wireless network please refer to [[printing:wireless:short|instructions]] to install the printers. +
-</note> +
- +
-==Printing from Apple Os X Workstation == +
-Apple Os X users rely on the advanced graphical interface of their computers, to access the printers. In reality this is just a frontend for the same CUPS subsystem that we use with Linux. As for the Linux workstations, Os X users connected to the  network by wire can browse the list of printers available without intervention. By selecting the printer from the menu //Shared printers// in the print dialog box this will be installed automatically. The options for printing can be selected in the different section of the print dialog box. click on **pages & copies** to see all the sections at your disposal. +
-As Os X is developed over the FreeBSD subsystem, all the options you can use for linux ([[printing:lpr|Basic]] and  [[printing:lpr:advanced|Advanced Printing Command]]) can be used even in this ambient, from a command line, without modifications. +
- +
-<note tip> +
-  * Users of laptops connected to the wireless network please refer to [[printing:wireless:short|instructions]] to install the printers. +
-</note> +
- +
-== Printing from a Windows Workstation == +
- +
-<note warning> +
-To access Shared printers Windows Users have to ask the permission to Administrators. No connections will be available to Windows Users that don't have an access to the server. +
-</note> +
- +
-In Windows, most programs will let you print from the File menu. Go to Start->Control Panel->Printers & Faxes to see the printers available. Machines managed by staff will have all network printers automatically added to this list. Users that have Windows laptops connected to the network by wire should go to Start->Run and enter **"\\lthiserv3.epfl.ch"** (without quotes), right click on the printer they want to use, and select connect. This will add that printer to the Printers & Faxes List. +
- +
-<note tip> +
-  * To set the default printer in Windows, right click on the printer in the Printers & Faxes list, and select "Select as Default Printer."  +
-  * Users of laptops connected to the wireless network please refer to [[printing:wireless:short|instructions]] to install the printers. +
-</note> +
- +
- +
- +
- Every //real// printer is controlled by several print queues that are useful to simplify the management. +
- +
-Alternatively it's possible to use the Gtklp program. Installed by default in every workstation, this program is a graphical interface to the printing subsystem and permit to control every aspect of the print process: number of copies, layout of the page output, print on single o both side of the pages. The use of this program is preferable when you don't want to use the standard options of printer queues. To use this program just launch gtklp from the command line, load the file you want print and select the option you desire.//+
