Every kind of files

<note> What means ?

Good question, I think the only limit is just your immagination. </note> This file server has a high level of performance and security in order to prevent the loose or the manual deletion of one file. You don't have limitation on the the type of files you want store in your homedir. The only limitations you are subject is the complessive disk space used by your files. At this moment all users share the same disk space (around 900 GByte) and we count on the personal attention to not overload the network and the file server. Although the disk space can appear huge, don't forget that all users of the network (the one you know, but also people you never meet physically) are using the same space, so pay attention. Maybe you didn't noticed, but the dimension of files increase constantly. Maybe you don't know, but the high quality of the song or video you are watching in the left window just now means that the file is big. When I say big I mean BIG. Just imagine how many floppy disk you need to store this file and think about carry all these floppies in you backpack (not to mention the time you need to write all the floppies). Networks simplified the transmission of data accross the planet, but this don't means that the work is completely disappeared, it's only hidden and performed by something else. Every night there's a backup of all the files present in our file server (currently 300 Gbytes). Transferring all these data accross the network needs time (around 50 Gbytes/hour) and we have only part of the night at our disposition (only closed and unused files can be backed up).

<note warning> For the moment the system is manageable, but don't try to find the boundaries of your possibility, the space used is checked by the System Administrators and if the homedir of one or more users are out of ordinary, they'll ask the users about this. </note>

To reduce the space used by personal (at this moment this means: songs, videos, photos) and unuseful files follow these tips:
  • Don't store multimedia files in your homedir. There's a server ready for you.
  • Remove regularly the photos or video you downloaded from the camera or from the phone
  • Remove regularly the old files you didn't used in the last 12 or 6 months (depends on your applications)

If you follow these directives all of us can use the file server without major problems.
