Printing from Apple Laptops
In the computers made by Apple (fixed or mobile), that use an operating system version 10.5 or above, the use of Unix print servers is disabled by default. This means that if you connect your laptop to our network you will not be able to see all the printers available.
In order to activate the access to all the printers you must insert the line
BrowseProtocols CUPS in the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.
To modify this file, you need access as Administrator of the laptop you're using, so if you don't have this kind of access you can stop reading now, else:
The file must modified by hands, and by hands I mean that you must open the terminal, and use a text editor to modify the file.
one possible way to do this is:
- open the terminal
- launch the command sudo vi /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
- find the line with BrowseAddress @LOCAL
- insert a new line and type this BrowseProtocols CUPS
- save the file and exit from the editor
- restart by hand the cups daemon by kiling the process or reboot the computer
- open the Preference Panel and search for the printer you want to install
