Printing from laptop connected to the Wireless "epfl" network


For the wireless epfl connection there's not broadcast information of the printers so you have to configure manually your laptops. follow these instructions:

HowTo connect to printers from Os X (Apple Macs)

  1. Open the “System Preferences” application and select “Print & Fax”
  2. On the “Printing” panel select the “+” to add a new printer
  3. On the new window select the “IP Printer” Icon
  4. In Protocol row select “Internet Printing Protocol - IPP”
  5. In Address row insert “melpomene.epfl.ch” (without the quotes)
  6. In Queue row you have to insert the name of the printer prefixed by printers/
  7. in Name row insert the name you want for the printer (look at the table below for the names)
  8. in Location row insert the location of the printer, if you want
  9. in “Print Using” row select the correct Manufacturer of the printer and then the model of the printer
  10. click the button Add
  11. on the new windows you have to insert the options for the printers (look at the table below)
  12. click the button Continue
  13. you can print.

HowTo connect to printers from MS Windows XP

  1. Connect the laptop to epfl wireless (you MUST be authenticated by the network)
  2. Click on Start
  3. From the menu select SettingsPrinter and Faxes
  4. Click on Add Printer, to start the Add Printer Wizard
  5. Click on Next
  6. Select the bullet A network printer, or a printer…
  7. Click on Next
  8. Select the bullet Connect to a printer on the Internet…
  9. In the URL: insert: http://melpomene.epfl.ch:631/printers/<name of printer>(look at the table below for the correct printer name)
  10. Click on Next
  11. Select the Manufacturer: HP
  12. Select the model: HP LaserJet 4000 Series PS
  13. Click on Next
  14. Answer No to the Default Printer request
  15. Click on Next
  16. Click on Finish

HowTo connect to printers from Linux

  1. Open the Browser (Firefox, Konqueror, Mozilla, Netscape, …)
  2. Insert the address http://127.0.0.1:631 in the Location Bar
  3. If asked enter the root password
  4. Select the Administration Tab
  5. Click on Add Printer
  6. In Name row insert the name you want for the printer
  7. In Location row insert the location of the printer, if you want
  8. In Description ….
  9. Click on Continue
  10. Select Internet Printing Protocol (ipp) from the pull down menu
  11. Click on Continue
  12. In the Device URI insert the http://melpomene.epfl.ch:631/printers/<name of printer> (look at the table below for the printer)
  13. Click on Continue
  14. Select HP from Make
  15. Click on Continue
  16. Select the printer model from the menu list
  17. Click on Continue
  18. If asked insert the root password in the dialog box
  19. Select the options for the printers (refer to table below)
  20. click the button Set Printer Options
  21. you can print.
